People say that the death of a loved one, loss of a job and moving house are three of the most stressful situations – and we had to endure all three at the same time.

I'm 39, and like many younger bereaved people, I've had to get used to a word I never thought would apply to me: widower.

A late spouse was most probably a very big part of your new partner's life and to get upset every time his/her name is mentioned makes for a very uncomfortable situation - for both of you.

This came out of the blue from my seven-year-old daughter Isabella – but then, little about our recent family life had been expected.

My children lost their mother, Carolina, to breast cancer in June 2013. When she was terminally ill, we left our house, jobs and schools and moved back to the UK from abroad.

Remember how much you cared whether your parents liked your high school boyfriend or girlfriend?

That is exactly how much your widowed parent (and his or her significant other) care whether or not you approve of their relationship--not at all.

This can be a difficult truth when you've lost one parent, and feel your surviving parent pulling away from the family into a new relationship, but remind yourself that we each deserve to seek our own happiness.
